HARPETH RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT

1,800 Linear Feet | Franklin, TN | Construction Completed in 2012

This project included a dam removal improving habitat for key rare species, improved water quality by reducing sediment and erosion, and enhanced recreational access and safety. In 2016, the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership nominated this Project as one of the National Fish Habitat Partnership’s 10 “Waters to Watch” Legacy projects. It was also recognized with the 2013 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award and in 2012 was named as one of the top 10 “Waters to Watch” by the National Fish Habitat Partnership. The Department of Interior named this project as a model of America’s Great Outdoors River Initiative to conserve and restore key rivers across the nation, expand outdoor recreational opportunities, and support jobs in local communities.

The Harpeth River Dam Removal & Restoration Project involved removing a low head dam on the Harpeth River in Franklin, TN.  Removal of the dam makes the Harpeth River one of the few free-flowing rivers in Tennessee; improves habitat for key, rare species; improves water quality by reducing sediment and erosion; and enhances recreational access and safety.  Selected as the sole demonstration project in Tennessee under the Great American Outdoors Rivers Initiative, this project illustrates how it is possible to restore the natural flow and ecology of a river system, while still allowing for drinking water withdrawals. In 2012 the National Fish Habitat Partnership listed the Harpeth River as one of the 10 “Waters to Watch”. This project also received the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in 2013.
